This is what a man in pursuit looks like- over the top, all out on the table, you can’t miss it.
Todd and I met in March of 1990, and as a high school junior, I remember teasing him he was a month late. I had spent the 14th of February watching other girls receive flowers and chocolate, wondering if that would ever happen for me.
The next day, I was called out of the first bell for a delivery of roses he had sent to my high school, along with a witty note wishing me a Happy Valentine’s Day. Then every period for the next seven, another bouquet of flowers arrived until I went home after school with both my arms and my heart full.
As romantic as Todd was and still is, he’s just a shadow reflection of my heavenly Bridegroom. God is infinitely more feeling, demonstrative and sacrificial. His pursuit of us is unrelenting. He is interested in delighting me, and is paying attention to the details. He cannot be missed- He is putting all his cards out on the table for everyone to see- He wants us, and will do literally anything for us to understand His love.
And as we look like Him to a lost world, may we pursue others in the same way- sharing when we’d rather not, being kind when it isn’t reciprocated, giving when it feels easier to hold onto something. God never wastes a single moment to show us His love, and I don’t want to either.
My 2021 word is pursue.
